Sania Mirza ends career with first round defeat, Read her journey here

India’s legendary female tennis player Sania Mirza has faced defeat in the first round of her last tournament. Sania suffered a first round defeat in the women’s doubles at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

Sania, who took court in the women’s doubles event with US’s Madison Keys, was defeated 6-4, 6-0 by the pair of Kudermetova and Samsonova. Thus ended Sania’s 20-year-long career.

On January 13 this year, Sania had written a three-page note saying that the Dubai Championship would be her last tournament after the Australian Open. However, he lost in the very first round of his last tournament. Earlier, Sania had reached the final with Rohan Bopanna in the mixed doubles event of the Australian Open.

What happened in Australian Open 2023?

Sania Mirza had to face defeat in her last Grand Slam. Sania and Rohan Bopanna lost in the mixed doubles final by a margin of 6-7, 6-2. She was knocked out in the second round in women’s doubles and lost in the finals in mixed doubles. With this defeat, Sania’s dream of a victorious farewell was shattered.

Sania and Rohan were defeated by the Brazilian pair of Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos 6-7, 2-6 in the mixed doubles final at the Australian Open. Speaking after the defeat in the final, Sania became very emotional and could not hold back her tears.


Sania won 43 WTA titles in her career. She also won three Grand Slam titles in the women’s doubles category. In 2016, she also became the women’s doubles champion at the Australian Open. Sania has also won three Grand Slams in mixed doubles. In 2009, she won the title in this category at the Australian Open. Sania held the number one spot in the women’s doubles rankings for a long time. However, in the last Grand Slam of her career, she remained one step away from victory. Now her career could not have a happy ending. However, now she will be seen in the Women’s IPL or rather the Women’s Premier League. Sania has been mentored by Royal Challengers Bangalore.
