What did Sania Mirza say on retirement?
In an interview, Mirza stated "I was going to stop right after the WTA Finals because we were going to make the WTA Finals, but I tore my tendon in my elbow right before U.S. Open, so I had to pull out of everything." Due to a persistent calf injury, Mirza had intended to retire at the end of the 2022 season; however, an elbow injury in August caused her to pull from the U.S. Open.
When Mirza triumphed in her native Hyderabad in 2005, she became the very first Indian woman to conquer a WTA singles title. She ranked 27th worldwide by 2007, breaking into the top 30.
After suffering from a persistent, career-threatening wrist illness, Mirza teamed up in doubles with Swiss superstar Martina Hingis. The self-described "Santina" duo won 14 titles, including Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open.
