Smriti Mandhana beats Babar Azam in earnings ! Bags WPL contract worth more than latter’s PSL contract DOUBLED

Smriti Mandhana – Babar Azam: The cricketing world made history on February 13, 2023, with the first-ever Women’s Premier League auction taking place in Mumbai. The auction featured 449 shortlisted players, and the inaugural tournament is scheduled to start on March 4. Smriti Mandhana, India’s vice-captain, became the first player to go under the hammer, securing a massive INR 3.4 crore contract with Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, it should be noted that this is much more than what Pakistan’s skipper Babar Azam is getting in PSL.

Smriti Mandhana earning more than Babar Azam

The bidding war between RCB and Mumbai Indians for Mandhana kicked off the auction. The two franchises vied for the marquee player, with Bangalore ultimately winning out, making her the most expensive player of the WPL 2023 auction. It’s worth noting that Mandhana’s INR 3.4 crore WPL salary is significantly higher than that of Pakistani captain Babar Azam, who will earn INR 1.38 crore playing for Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL 2023.

After signing Smriti Mandhana, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has the option of considering her for the team captaincy. Mandhana has previously led the Indian team to victory in the absence of Harmanpreet Kaur. During the Asia Cup in October 2022, she captained India to wins in a couple of games.

RCB gears up for WPL

RCB spent almost half of their INR 12 crore purse during the first round of the WPL auction. They managed to acquire the services of star all-rounder Ellyse Perry from Australia, New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine, and India’s U-19 winning player and wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh. They further strengthened their squad by spending big sums on India’s pace sensation Renuka Singh Thakur.

After sitting out for most of the auction, RCB came back with a bang during the accelerated auction. They signed English skipper Heather Knight, South African skipper Dane van Niekerk, and Australia’s pace spearhead Megan Schutt to complete their squad.
