T20 World Cup 2022 De Silva powers Sri Lanka's hopes in tournament; Afghanistan knocked out with their defeat

T20 World Cup 2022: At the Gabba in Brisbane on Tuesday, Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by six wickets thanks to an unbeaten 66 from Dhananjaya de Silva and a three-wicket haul from Wanindu Hasaranga.

Afghanistan, who chose to bowl first, made a good start before Rahmanullah Gurbaz was dismissed by Lahiru Kumara, who was then followed by Usman Ghani. As Afghanistan was contained at 144/8, de Silva and Kasun Rajitha each took one wicket.

As Pathum Nissanka was later dismissed for 10, Mujeeb Ur Rehman gave Afghanistan a breakthrough. Kusal Mendis’ wicket was afterwards taken by Rashid Khan as well. De Silva, though, was the centre of the Sri Lankan batting order as they won the match with nine balls remaining.

The victory of Sri Lanka in this match also ensures that Afghanistan is now out from the semi-final race of T20 World Cup 2022. With two points in four games, there are no hopes left for the team. Whereas, Sri Lanka has four points in the same number of games making their campaign in the tournament alive.

Now, Afghanistan has one match left in this edition, against Australia on 4th of November. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will now take on England on 5th of November.
