T20 World Cup 2026: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has “thrown out” Bangladesh from the T20 World Cup 2026 to be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, 2026. The world’s governing body of cricket has replaced the Bangla Tigers with Scotland who would now compete with England, West Indies, Italy and Nepal.
T20 World Cup 2026-Would West Indies And England Have Easy Points Now?
West Indies and England are now likely to be the top two teams from Group C of the T20 World Cup 2026 (they may enter the Super 8 stage if they top).
DON'T MISS
Italy, Nepal and Scotland don’t have much ammunition in their ranks to derail the journey of West Indies and England. However, not anything is assured in the game of cricket as even the mightiest of teams have collapsed numerous times against the underdog teams.
How Much Bangladesh Is Set To Lose?
Bangladesh would now lose a significant chunk of guaranteed tournament revenue, including potential loss of prize money and participation fees, with estimates suggesting hundreds of thousands to over a million dollars in direct losses, plus possible fines and cuts to its ICC revenue share over the 2024–2027 cycle.
In rare circumstances, it may also mean a reduction or suspension of the annual share of the Bangladesh Cricket Board. The ICC may strip or deny the BCB of any future rights to host elite tournaments in the near future. Financial penalties may amount to 200,000 dollars; the team’s ICC rankings may also be impacted. This would mean that Bangladesh would not have any automatic qualification advantages for future ICC events, forcing it to fight through qualifiers.
Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin remarked that the decision of Bangladesh to skip the T20 World Cup in India was a bad decision. Azhar added it is completely Bangladesh’s loss as there is no security risk to any of the Bangladeshi players.
