Tim Paine: After dedicating 18 long years of his life to cricket, former Australian captain Tim Paine has decided to retire from all forms of domestic cricket. During his last match, which was a draw between Tasmania and Queensland, Paine received a guard of honour from his teammates. The moment left him feeling emotional, as seen in the video. He played a total of 95 matches in the Sheffield Shield, and his debut in first-class cricket dates back to 2005.

Tim Paine’s illustrious career

Tim Paine has an impressive record of 295 dismissals in first-class cricket as a Tasmanian wicketkeeper. After taking a break from cricket due to mental health issues, Paine made a comeback in August 2022 and played 7 matches in the 2022-23 domestic season. In these matches, he scored 156 runs with an average of 17.33. Paine has a first-class batting average of nearly 30 with over 4000 runs and has helped Tasmania win two titles in his career.

After the ball-tampering controversy in 2018, Tim Paine was named the Australia Test team’s captain. Throughout his leadership of the team, which included 23 of his 35 Test matches, he did a great job.

Allegations on Tim Paine

In a major twist before the Ashes 2021, Tim Paine stepped down as the captain of the Australian Test team due to allegations of sexting that became public. Paine was all set to lead the team in the series, but the controversy led to his withdrawal from the squad.

A former receptionist at Cricket Tasmania had accused Paine of sending her sexually explicit messages in 2017. Paine had previously been cleared of the allegations by a Cricket Australia investigation, which only came to light recently. Paine, however, claimed that the messaging was consensual. Tim Paine announced his retirement all of a sudden and did not have a public announcement.

Under Paine’s captaincy, Australia lost only eight matches while winning 11 out of 23. He was at the helm when India achieved their first Test series win in Australia in 2018-19 and when they broke the Gabba fortress to win the series for the second consecutive time in 2020-21.
