Tokyo Olympics: Mirabai Chanu grand welcome as she reaches home with silver medal

Indian woman weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who won a silver medal in Tokyo Olympics, has reached her home in Imphal on Tuesday. On reaching his home state, he was given a grand welcome. State Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh himself was present to welcome Chanu. The CM welcomed Chanu by wearing a gamosa. During this, the Chief Minister said, ‘Everyone in the state is very happy to have you back in Manipur. Your achievement in the Tokyo Olympics is no small feat and we are very proud of you.

On reaching Imphal, a program was organized, in which the Manipur government honored Mirabai Chanu with one crore rupees. Apart from this, Chanu, a silver medalist, was awarded the rank of Additional SP in the state police. Meera became emotional during this. Tears of happiness welled up from his eyes. During this program other top officials including the CM of the state were present.

Mirabai secured the second position in the 49kg category. The gold of this event has been won by Jihoi Hou of China.

Mirabai is the second woman from India to win a medal in weightlifting. Earlier, Karnam Malleswari had won a bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

In the second attempt, Mirabai Chanu was successful in lifting 115 kg. However, she failed in the third attempt and won the silver medal.
