Vinesh Phogat: Indian women wrestler creates history in Belgard, wins the bronze medal in Wrestling Championship

Vinesh Phogat has created history in Belgrade. She opened India’s account at the Wrestling Championship by claiming her 2nd bronze medal in the world meet, on Wednesday, September 14. Vinesh has become the first ever Indian woman to win more than one medal at the wrestling world championships.

Indian wrestler defeated European Champion Emma Malmgem by 8-0 in the bronze medal bout of 53KG freestyle on Wednesday. It was a great comeback from Vinesh Phogat. She suffered a shock loss in the opening round of the match of 53KG category on Tuesday. The Indian wrestler lost her match to Mangolia’s Khulan Bathkhuyag by 0-7 but she was pull into a repechage round. Bathkhuyag reached the final and eventually finished with the silver medal.

Vinesh won the bronze medal

Vinesh was leading by 2-0 after a solid show of defensive discipline at the end of the first period in her bronze medal match following which she upped the ante to go 8-0 up and secure victory by points. Vinesh had defeated Zhuldyz of Kazakhastan in the first round of the repechage and she qualified for the bronze medal match after her 2nd win against Leyla Gurbanov.  Meanwhile, India’s Nisha Dahiya will fight her bronze medal bout in the women’s 68kg category. She lost her semi-final bout to young Japan wrestler Ami Ishii.
