Rohit took his first and only hattrick against MI

Prior to his stint with MI, Rohit played for Deccan Chargers in the first three editions of the IPL and won the tournament with them in 2009. That year, the IPL was held in South Africa, and Rohit was named the Emerging Player of the Year after scoring 362 runs in 16 innings and taking 11 wickets. He played a crucial role in Adam Gilchrist's side's triumph.

During the 2009 IPL, Rohit, who had started his cricketing journey as a bowler, also recorded a hat-trick against the Mumbai Indians in Match Number 32 played in Centurion on May 6. He finished his spell of two overs with figures of 4 for 6, leaving a lasting impression on the tournament.

During the match, Rohit bowled Abhishek Nayar on the penultimate ball of the 16th over and then dismissed Harbhajan Singh on the very next ball. This was followed by his captain, Adam Gilchrist, asking him to bowl the 18th over of the innings as well, during which he dismissed South African batsman Jean-Paul Duminy to complete his hat-trick. Rohit ended the match with figures of 4 for 6 in 2 overs and also finished as the highest run-scorer for his side, making 38 off 36 balls.
