Virat has to win the World Cup to prove his captaincy: Sunil Gavaskar

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has said that if Virat Kohli has to prove himself, he will have to prove his captaincy. Since 2016 Virat emerged as the most successful captain and in this time he also became the most successful Test captain for the Indian team by overshadowing the legendary MS Dhoni. In a recent interview, Sunil Gavaskar believes that the Delhi-born cricketer must earn the World Cup to strengthen his legacy.

Virat Kohli entered his first 50-over World Cup as captain in the 2019 World Cup, his team also consists of many other big players of the Indian cricket; MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul. Team India topped the group stage on the basis of their performance, causing England the only a single loss. However, his team was eliminated from the tournament in the semi-finals, losing to New Zealand in a low-scoring game. The brilliant pair of Kohli and Rohit Sharma failed to something great in that semi-final.

Sunil Gavaskar admitted that a captain gets recognition from the World Championship/World Cup. He acknowledged that winning the Asia Cup is a great achievement; however, the leader needs to conquer the world and this is the way he evolves.

The 70-year-old said that “The top 3 batsmen of Team India are the best in the world, although many batsmen here have not got a chance to prove themselves in the middle order. Therefore, when the top three are shattered in a big match, we cannot blame the middle order.”

Gavaskar said that “You have a strong top three, but if the middle order is weak then you can fail on the big occasion as it happened in the World Cup, so we have to strengthen the middle with the top as well.”
