Washington Sundar: Star all-rounder stuns crowd with an unbelievable shot across the stumps during IND vs NZ | Watch video

Washington Sundar: On Friday, Washington Sundar’s fireworks display surprised the fans as people were prepared for a fiery knock from Suryakumar Yadav. In Auckland’s opening ODI match against New Zealand, Sundar’s cameo helped India go beyond the target of 300 runs.

Fiery cameo by Washington Sundar

The left-handed player, who has primarily done off-spin bowling in his international career, displayed his hitting power to everyone. Sundar, a top-order batsman for Tamil Nadu scored an unbeaten 37 off just 16 balls when he came in to bat at No. 7 and helped India, batting first, to 306 for 7 wickets. Sundar smashed out three fours and as many sixes in his fiery inning, but one particular hit off Matt Henry caught everyone’s attention.

Sundar displayed flawless hitting in the last over of the Indian innings, walking across his stumps and scooping a Matt Henry low full toss over the short-fine fielder for a four. He moved so instantly that Henry had no chance to adjust his length, which made the shot particularly impressive. Sundar was almost on the ground when he finished playing the scoop. Videos of that shot quickly became viral on the internet.

Iyer and Gill smash a fine fifty

Shreyas Iyer’s 80-run innings gave India a much needed stability prior to Sundar’s cameo. Following the sending of the visitors to bat, Shikhar Dhawan (72 off 77 balls) and Shubman Gill (50 off 65) both scored slick fiftys.

With India at 160 for four in the 33rd over on a pitch with short boundaries, the hosts would have felt that they are in control. However, the partnership between Iyer and Sanju Smason, which lasted until the latter was caught by Glenn Phillips with a spectacular throw, helped to steady the innings and add 94 runs. Iyer became only the second player after Rameez Raja to score four or more consecutive fifties in New Zealand.
