Wrestlers Allege Abuse and Assault by Delhi Police During Protest, Vinesh Phogat Breaks Down, says ‘Itni Izzat Giraoge Kya?’

Wrestlers Protest: In the late hours of Wednesday, a fight broke out at Jantar Mantar between protesting wrestlers and Delhi Police. The players who are protesting claim that police officers assaulted and mistreated them. Following allegations of sexual assault against the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Brij Bhushan Singh, a protest has been held in the nation’s capital.

Somnath Bharti was taken into custody

Somnath Bharti, a Malviya Nagar Aam Aadmi Party MLA, was taken into custody while protesting. According to Delhi Police, Bharti allegedly entered the area with folding beds without authorization. However, wrestler Geeta Phogat claims that her sibling was hurt during the altercation with the police. The police stated in a statement, ‘On intervention, the supporters got hostile in their attempts to remove the beds from the truck. After a brief altercation, Mr. Somnath Bharti and two other people were taken into custody.’

Vinesh Phogat sobbed in front of the camera

Vinesh Phogat, a star wrestler from India and two-time Olympian, sobbed in front of the camera on Wednesday as she and her teammates demonstrated against WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over claims that he assaulted seven female grapplers. Speaking at a press conference, Vinesh Phogat said that a Delhi Police officer had physically assaulted some of the protesting group’s members. ‘Brij Bhishan, who is charged with sexual harassment, slumbers soundly at home. We had cots with us. Izzat giraoge itni, kya? (Will you treat us with such contempt?) For respect, we are struggling. Did we win gold to witness such days? ‘a distraught Phogat asked in a chocked voice.

CCTV cameras have been put at the protest site

In the video, the accused police officer can be seen sitting, despite the protesters’ claims that his colleagues were passive bystanders. The Delhi Police announced that they will carefully review the CCTV footage of the protest venue and look into the claims made by the wrestlers. Police announced that high-definition CCTV cameras have been put at the protest site and that the footage from each camera will be scrutinised frame by frame. Saurabh Bharadwaj, the minister of health for Delhi, arrived at the scene of the demonstration in support of the athletes.
