Wrestling Federation of India: The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has been reinstated by United World Wrestling (UWW) as of February 9, overturning the suspension imposed on August 23 of the previous year. The suspension was initially issued due to the WFI's failure to conduct timely elections. However, the reinstatement comes with specific conditions.
United World Wrestling Lifts Suspension on Wrestling Federation of India
According to a statement from the world wrestling body, UWW has decided to lift the suspension with certain conditions, including the re-conducting of elections for the WFI's Athletes' Commission. Candidates for this commission must be active athletes or those retired for no longer than four years. The elections will be held during trials or any senior national championships before July 1, 2024, exclusively allowing athletes to vote.
WFI is required to provide written guarantees to UWW
Additionally, the WFI is required to provide written guarantees to UWW, ensuring that all wrestlers will be considered for participation without discrimination in all WFI events, especially trials for the Olympic Games and other major national and international competitions. This non-discrimination commitment extends to the three athletes who previously protested against alleged wrongdoing by the former WFI President.
It is noteworthy that in December of the previous year, the WFI conducted elections, resulting in Sanjay Singh's victory. Singh is a supporter of former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh, against whom several athletes, including Bajrang Puniya, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik, had protested.
The Ministry of Sports in India suspended the newly elected WFI body led by Chief Sanjay Singh on December 24. The suspension was a response to the WFI's failure to adhere to the constitution's provisions while hastily planning to host the wrestling nationals.
