Mumbai’s Bandra family court has officially granted a mutual consent divorce to cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and choreographer Dhanashree Verma. The court’s decision, announced on Thursday, marks the formal dissolution of their marriage, which began in December 2020 after a private wedding in Gurugram.

Confirming the court’s verdict, Chahal’s legal representative stated, “The divorce has been granted. Their marriage is officially dissolved, and they are no longer husband and wife.” The couple had filed a mutual consent divorce plea, which was accepted by the family court.

A day before the final ruling, the Bombay High Court granted an exemption from the six-month cooling-off period in their divorce proceedings. Justice Madhav Jamdar directed the Bandra family court to decide the petition immediately, taking into consideration Chahal’s upcoming IPL 2025 commitments.

Why Was the Cooling-Off Period Waived in Chahal-Dhanashree Divorce?

Under Hindu law, couples seeking mutual consent divorce must live separately for at least one year before filing for legal separation. Additionally, a statutory six-month cooling-off period is mandated under Section 13B(2) of the Hindu Marriage Act. This period is intended to encourage reconciliation between the couple.

However, in a significant 2017 ruling, the Supreme Court clarified that the cooling-off period is not mandatory. If the court believes there is no possibility of reconciliation, it can waive this waiting time. Given that Yuzvendra Chahal and Dhanashree Verma had been living apart for over two and a half years and had already agreed upon financial settlements, the court found no reason to delay the process.

As one of India’s most successful leg-spinners, Chahal’s focus now shifts to his IPL journey. He was picked by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for Rs 18 crore in the IPL 2025 auction. His IPL record speaks for itself, as he remains the league’s highest wicket-taker, surpassing legends like Dwayne Bravo.

Despite parting ways with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after the 2021 season, Chahal’s performance has remained stellar. Playing for Rajasthan Royals (RR), he won the Purple Cap in 2022 and has continued to deliver match-winning performances.

Dhanashree Verma’s Career and Social Media Buzz

Meanwhile, Dhanashree Verma, a renowned dancer and choreographer, continues to shine in her professional career. Known for her fusion dance style, she has amassed a large following on social media.

Amid the divorce proceedings, Chahal’s public appearances sparked speculation about his personal life. Recently, he was seen sitting beside social media influencer RJ Mahvash during the Champions Trophy Final. This wasn’t the first time the two were linked. In December, a viral picture of them celebrating Christmas fueled rumors.

Addressing the speculation, RJ Mahvash dismissed the rumors on Instagram. She wrote, “If you’re seen with someone of the opposite gender, does that mean you’re dating them? What year is this? Stop dragging my name into unnecessary PR cover-ups.”
