Arvind Kejriwal: Aam Aadmi Party’s National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has launched a groundbreaking initiative to provide clean water 24 hours a day, starting in Rajendra Nagar. Kejriwal, while drinking water directly from a tap outside a house in Rajendra Nagar, promised that if his government is re-elected in 2025, clean water will be supplied 24/7 across Delhi within the next five years. He shared that a detailed plan has been prepared, which includes setting up 2,500 tube wells to extract 1,400 MGD (Million Gallons per Day) of water for Delhi.
The booster pumping station in Rajendra Nagar has already started functioning, and similar stations will be set up in other areas. This initiative aims to ensure that every household in Delhi has access to clean water 24/7 directly from their taps.
500 Families See a Change, No More RO Systems, Savings Begin
Residents of Rajendra Nagar, like Seema Srivastava, are overjoyed with the availability of clean water 24/7. This development has brought relief to 500 families in the area who now receive clean drinking water directly from taps. Seema expressed her happiness, saying that earlier, water was supplied only twice a day for an hour each, and it wasn’t fit for drinking.
To cope, she had installed an RO system, but frequent servicing and breakdowns caused constant trouble and expenses. The annual maintenance cost of around ₹4,000 is now a thing of the past.
₹80 Per Gallon Water Purchases End
Seema also mentioned that due to water scarcity, she had to buy water at ₹80 per gallon. With the continuous supply of clean water, this daily expense has stopped. Another resident, Ram Prasad, noted that earlier, muddy water was often supplied, but now it’s crystal clear and drinkable directly from the tap. He highlighted the use of advanced foreign technology to prevent water leakage and ensure supply to all floors of buildings.
Ram Prasad also shared that Kejriwal personally inspected the setup and even drank water from a household tap to verify the quality.
A ‘Water Revolution’ in Delhi
While water supply through taps is not new in Delhi, it was not directly drinkable due to high ammonia levels. Kejriwal has now assured citizens that within the next five years, clean drinking water will be available across the city. Delhi’s Chief Minister Atishi also took to social media platform X to celebrate the initiative.
She wrote, “The water revolution has begun in Delhi! After 24x7 electricity, now 24x7 water supply is becoming a reality. Under Arvind Kejriwal’s guidance, the 24x7 clean water project has started in Pandav Nagar DDA flats. Residents here now have access to fresh and clean water 24/7. Kejriwal visited homes, drank tap water, and proved that promises made are fulfilled. A blueprint is ready to implement this across Delhi. The day is not far when every resident of Delhi will have access to clean water 24/7.”
Where Does Delhi’s Water Come From?
Delhi receives water from various sources, including Ganga water from Uttar Pradesh, Yamuna water from Haryana, and Bhakra Nangal water from Punjab. According to the 2023 Economic Survey, the Yamuna River supplies 389 million gallons, the Ganga River supplies 253 million gallons, and the Ravi-Beas River system via the Bhakra-Nangal project supplies 221 million gallons of water daily. Additionally, wells, tube wells, and underground water contribute 90 million gallons, totaling 953 million gallons daily to quench Delhi’s thirst. This figure increased to 969 million gallons in 2024.
Kejriwal’s Roadmap for Water Supply
In the last decade, Delhi’s water situation has significantly improved. Before the Aam Aadmi Party’s government came to power, 50-60% of the water supply was dependent on tankers, with a strong presence of tanker mafias. Today, 97% of Delhi’s population receives piped water supply, although it is still time-bound. People face water shortages between May and July.
Kejriwal has devised an extensive roadmap to address this issue. He pointed out that while digging in Yamuna floodplain areas often reveals brackish and dirty water, two new plants are being set up to purify it. Around 2,500 tube wells will be installed, providing an additional 200 MGD of water from the Yamuna floodplains. This water will be treated and made drinkable before being distributed 24/7 to every household in Delhi.
Kejriwal assured, “What I promise, I deliver. I don’t make hollow statements or election gimmicks.”
