Islamic State: On Thursday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested an individual suspected of being connected to a case associated with a banned terrorist group, the Islamic State, operating in Jharkhand. In a subsequent action, law enforcement conducted numerous operations in nine different locations. These operations were conducted in the aftermath of the July arrest of Faizan Ansari, a student from Aligarh Muslim University, who had reportedly encountered radicalised people while residing near the university campus.

NIA’s extensive search operation

As part of the operations carried out on Thursday, searches were conducted at the residences of people suspected of wrongdoing in nine different locations spanning seven states. These coordinated efforts resulted in the arrest of Rahul Sen, who also goes by the aliases Omar and Omar Bahadur. During Rahul Sen’s arrest, police seized a significant amount of evidence, including electronic and digital devices such as laptops, pen drives, and mobile phones, as well as a knife, a veil, and various documents associated with ISIS.

Search operations across states

These operations spanned across multiple locations, including the Siwan district in Bihar, Jaunpur, Azamgarh, and Maharajganj districts in Uttar Pradesh, Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh, Ludhiana in Punjab, South Goa in Goa, Yadgir in Karnataka, and Mumbai in Maharashtra.

Faizan was a student of AMU

Faizan, a student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, resided in a lodge near the campus during his time at Aligarh Muslim University. During this period, he came into contact with people who had been radicalised and maintained communication with ISIS operatives. Together, they formed a group with the objective of influencing others to join ISIS.

According to the investigations conducted by the NIA, Faizan, aged 19, played a central role in devising the conspiracy for the Jharkhand terror module. He worked with his associates and unidentified people through social media platforms, with the intent of actively supporting the proscribed terrorist organization, ISIS, and disseminating its propaganda.
