Assam Floods: Union HM Amit Shah dials CM Himanta, assures support amidst difficult conditions

The First wave of Floods have caused major disruption to normal life in many parts of Assam

Assam Floods: On Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah dialed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam as the state remains in peril due to the prevailing flood situation. According to a report by PTI, although water level has started to recede more than four lakh people have been affected across nine districts of the state. As per Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), until now three people have lost their lives in the first wave of this years floods.

No relief despite receding water level

CM Himanta Sarma has said that his government is on high alert and is actively providing assistance to the affected populace.

Over 4,07,700 people are impacted by the floods in districts of Barpeta, Dhubri, Kamrup, Goalpara, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Darrang, Udalguri and Baksa. Despite the recorded receding in water levels of flood, the populace and authorities have not received substantial relief. CM Sarma said to reporters after his conversation with HM Shah “Union Home Minister called me today and inquired about the flood situation in Assam. He said NDRF has been kept on stand-by and for any emergency Govt of India is there. I’ve told him that as of now the situation is under control and are constantly monitoring the situation.”

Relief Work and Damage

As per ADMA, The administration is operating a total of 101 relief camps in districts of Barpeta, Dhubri, Kamrup, Goalpara, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Darrang, Udalguri and Baksaf where 81,352 persons have been provided shelter. Additionally 19 relief distribution centers are being run in five districts of the state. Responding to HM’s tweet CM Sarma said  “Gratitude Hon’ble Home Minister for your proactive response & concern regarding the flood situation in Assam. The Assam Government is on high alert and providing all assistance to the affected persons.” As of now 1,118 villages are reported to be under water and 8,469.56 hectares of crop area have submerged in the flood waters. Various Embankments, bridges, roads, and other essential infrastructure have been damaged by flood waters across the state causing major logistical disruption.
