A tragic incident unfolded today in Mizoram as an under-construction railway bridge collapsed, resulting in the unfortunate loss of at least 17 workers' lives. The catastrophe occurred in the Sairang area, approximately 21 km away from Aizawl. As of now, the authorities are diligently working to rescue individuals who may still be trapped underneath the debris. It has been disclosed that there were around 35 to 40 construction workers present at the site when the bridge gave way.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Reacts
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, conveyed his deep sorrow regarding the incident and declared a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives, along with Rs 50,000 for each injured individual.
"Under construction railway over bridge at Sairang, near Aizawl collapsed today; atleast 17 workers died: Rescue under progress. Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Sending gratitude to the people who have come out in large numbers to help with rescue operations," he said on social platform X, previously known as Twitter.
Zoramthanga, the Chief Minister of Mizoram, affirmed that ongoing efforts are being made to carry out the rescue operations efficiently at the accident site. Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, made contact with Mizoram's Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati and the Chief Minister, offering unwavering support and assistance during this challenging time.
Sabyasachi De, the Chief Public Relation Officer of the Northeast Frontier Railway, reported that a team of railway officials has been promptly dispatched to the scene, with senior officials from the zone also scheduled to visit. Their objective is to assess the situation on the ground and offer necessary assistance in this distressing situation.
