In a landmark development for public healthcare in the national capital, the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) has officially been extended to Delhi, marking a long-awaited breakthrough for residents. Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for enabling the rollout of this historic health scheme, calling it a “visionary step” toward ensuring medical security for every family in the city.

The scheme, which offers free health coverage up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalization, is expected to transform access to healthcare for lakhs of underprivileged and lower-middle-class families in Delhi.

What the Scheme Offers to Delhi Residents

Under Ayushman Bharat, eligible families in Delhi will now be able to access quality healthcare services from empaneled public and private hospitals without bearing the burden of hefty treatment costs. The coverage includes:

Hospitalization Expenses: For serious illnesses, including heart surgeries, cancer treatment, and organ transplants.

Cashless and Paperless Access: Beneficiaries will receive treatment without upfront payment.

Coverage for All Ages: No cap on family size or age under the scheme.

Pan-India Portability: Delhi residents can also avail treatment in empaneled hospitals across India.

The scheme is particularly expected to benefit daily wage workers, unorganized sector employees, senior citizens without pension, and low-income families who often delay treatment due to financial limitations.

CM Rekha Gupta Calls It a “Milestone”

Calling the implementation a “milestone in healthcare security,” CM Rekha Gupta emphasized that this move reflects a commitment to public service and inclusive development. “With Ayushman Bharat, every Delhi family can now look forward to a safer and healthier future. It will empower citizens by eliminating the financial stress of medical emergencies,” she said in a tweet.

PM Modi’s Endorsement

Prime Minister Modi also shared his thoughts via social media, stating that the scheme’s rollout in Delhi is a result of “double-engine government” efforts and that it will significantly benefit lakhs of citizens in the capital.

What’s Next?

The health department, in coordination with empaneled hospitals and local bodies, will soon begin awareness drives and distribution of Ayushman cards across Delhi. Helplines, mobile health camps, and enrollment kiosks will be set up to help eligible families understand the scheme and begin availing its benefits.

With rising medical costs and increasing health concerns in urban areas, the Ayushman Bharat scheme is poised to provide a crucial safety net for millions in Delhi—ensuring that no one is denied treatment for lack of resources.
