Bahanaga Bazar Station Sealed for Odisha Train Crash Investigation, No Halts Until Further Notice

Odisha

Odisha: Following the fatal triple-train crash in Balasore district, Odisha, the Bahanaga Bazar station has been sealed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a part of their ongoing probe. This collision, which occurred on June 2, involved two passenger trains and a goods train, causing the deaths of 288 people and injuring over 1,200.

Sealing of Bahanaga Bazar Station: CBI in Action

The CBI’s decision to seal the Bahanaga Bazar station prevents the station staff’s access to the signalling system. Consequently, no passenger or goods train will stop at this station until further notice. According to Aditya Kumar Chaudhary, the South Eastern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer, crucial pieces of evidence like the station’s logbook, relay panel, and other equipment have been seized by the CBI.

Before the seal, around seven trains had resumed their halt at the station post the restoration of up and down lines. Under normal circumstances, approximately 170 trains pass through the Bahanaga Bazar Railway station daily, with only a few passenger trains making a brief stop.

The Reason Behind the CBI Probe: Seeking Accountability

The CBI’s involvement was prompted by the assertion from railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who attributed the disastrous accident to alterations in the electronic interlocking system. The Minister also insinuated the possibility of “criminal acts” and potential sabotage, hence the need for the CBI’s intervention.

On a more sombre note, out of the 288 deceased victims, 200 bodies have been identified and returned to their families. However, around 80 remain unidentified and unclaimed at the Bhubaneswar AIIMS morgue. Chaudhary further disclosed that ex-gratia has been provided to 709 out of the 1,200 passengers injured in the accident.

As investigations proceed, the future of the Bahanaga Bazar station remains uncertain. With the evidence mounting and accusations of foul play, this incident has not only stirred up the railway community but also left a profound impact on the citizens of Odisha. The resolution of this incident is anxiously awaited as the nation seeks justice for the victims of the tragic accident.
