Bengaluru’s Rail Revolution! SWR Proposes 287-km Circular Rail Network

As South Western Railway suggests a 287-kilometer circular rail network, consider the revolutionary idea for Bengaluru's transport system.


Bengaluru: There is good news for Bengaluru commuters. On the outskirts of Bengaluru, South Western Railway (SWR) has suggested building a 287-kilometer circular rail network. According to a TOI report, the project intends to complement the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) and Namma Metro by launching additional local train services along this circular line, which will ease congestion on current rail networks.

Strategic Connectivity

Important places like Devanahalli, which is adjacent to Kempegowda International Airport, and Heelalige, which is near to several industrial regions and satellite towns including Doddaballapur and Hoskote, would be connected by the train line. According to SWR General Manager Sanjeev Kishore, the Ministry of Railways has given approval to carry out the Final Location Survey (FLS) for the double-line circular rail network in accordance with SWR’s proposal, as reported by TOI. Nidvanda, Doddaballapur, Devanahalli, Malur, Heelalige, Solur, and Nidvanda will all be connected by the proposed network, which aims to ease traffic in Bengaluru’s existing railway network and boost rail capacity for the city’s future demands.

Financial Investment

Surveying the alignment, mapping stations, figuring out how much land is needed, and evaluating civil buildings like bridges are all part of the Rs 7.2 crore FLS. The proposed network, according to SWR, will provide convenient and reasonably priced train services that will enhance both the city’s Metro rail system and the suburban rail network. Through the use of Memu/Demu trains, the network is anticipated to lessen the strain on long-distance trains, hence relieving congestion on the current railway lines. Commuters from satellite towns who often go to Bengaluru will profit from this. Dedicated trains will run the full 287 km of the line in both directions.

Peak Hour Congestion

During peak hours, the utilisation of queue capacity within the city borders might reach 110%. While the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) intends to manage Namma Metro, reaching a distance of 175 km by 2025 and expanding it to 314 km by 2040, KRIDE (Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka)) is currently developing 148 suburban rail networks.
