Farmers in Bihar’s Buxar area who had been protesting for the preceding 85 days against a thermal power plant allegedly faced attacks from numerous police officers while they slept in their houses.
The incident happened in the district’s Chausa sub-division, in the village of Banarpur.
Police officers broke into the home without permission and attacked a farmer who was protesting and seeking fair recompense for the taken-over land. Women were not exempt from this either. In the home itself, sticks began to fall. There is uproar in the area after a video of the police beating went viral on social media.
Seeing the furious crowd, the police tried to disperse the crowd by firing in the air. Now the entire area has been converted into a police cantonment. During this time, stone pelting also took place between the farmer and the police. At present, the police are trying to control the situation.
The farmers had earlier on Tuesday shut the company’s office’s main entrance and demanded fair pay for the property it had purchased for the thermal power project. The farmers reported that at around midnight, while they were resting in their homes, police officers arrived and began pounding on their doors. They continued, “When they opened the doors, the staff began striking them with batons and also misbehaving with some women who were at the scene.”
Following the assault, the farmer escalated his demonstrations on Wednesday, which erupted into violence when he set fire to several police cars. The police party was also stoned by the peasants. Due to the sensitive situation in the village, a sizable contingent of district police officers has been sent there. The district police claimed that they have arrested four persons for creating arson in the village.
