UP MLC by-election: The Bharatiya Janata Party won the bypoll on two Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council (LC) seats voting for which took place on Monday.
The winning BJP candidates are Manvendra Singh and Padmasen Chaudhary. They defeated their Samajwadi Party (SP) opponents. Two Congress MLAs and a lone BSP MLA stayed away from voting.
Seven MLAs did not vote
The Legislative Assembly has 403 members. Out of them, 396 members participated in the voting while one vote was declared invalid. Seven MLAs, three from SP, two from Congress, and one each from SBSP and BSP—did not vote.
Manvendra Singh of BJP got 280 votes in the Legislative Council election while Padmasen Chowdhary of BJP, secured 279 votes. Samajwadi Party’s candidates, Ramkaran Nirmal and Ramjatan Rajbhar, received 116 and 115 votes, respectively.
Those who did not vote included lone BSP MLA Uma Shankar Singh, both the MLAs of Congress i.e. Aradhana Mishra and Virendra Chaudhary, jailed Suhel Dev Bhartiya Samaj Party MLA Abbas Ansari and also SP MLAs Rama Kant Yadav, Irfan Solanki and Manoj Paras.
Of the two seats, one had fallen vacant following the death of BJP leader Banwari Lal Dohre and another after BJP leader Laxman Acharya became the Governor of Sikkim.
CM congratulates winners
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated both the BJP nominees for the victory. “Heartiest congratulations to the candidates of the double-engine government, Mr. Padamsen Chowdhary and Mr. Manvendra Singh, for the victory in the byelections for the post of members of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. We have full faith that according to the vision of the respected Prime Minister, the public conduct, hard work and experience of both the victorious respected members will be helpful in achieving the resolution of ‘self-reliant Uttar Pradesh’,” said Mr. Adityanath.
