Kerala: BJP To Outreach Christians, Muslims: Sources

With experience in the Northeast, the BJP is now targeting Kerala with a large public relations campaign that aims to include the two most important non-Hindu communities, Muslims and Christians. Combined, they make about 46% of the population, making them essential for gaining traction in a state that has historically been a stronghold of the Left and the Congress. The BJP, which stepped up its outreach in Kerala ahead of the 2019 election, has been unable to make inroads.

In its loud agitation over the Sabarimala issue, the party failed to make any headway in the state, going against the national trend. 15 of the state’s 20 Lok Sabha seats were won by the Congress. Another four seats were won by its allies, including two by the Indian Union Muslim League, one by the Kerala Congress (Mani group), and two by the Revolutionary Socialist Party.

The result was seen as supporting the party’s position on religious matters.

Since then, despite numerous incidences of intercommunal violence between right-wing supporters and the Left, the BJP’s expansion in the state has been stalled.

According to sources, the BJP activists will visit Christians’ houses during the week of Easter as part of the massive outreach programme planned this season. 10,000 BJP members will visit the houses of 1 lakh Christians on April 9, which is Easter Sunday.

BJP members visited Christian homes during the Christmas

According to accounts, thousands of BJP members visited Christian homes during the Christmas week of last year with gifts.

The third week of April will see visits from right-wing workers to Muslim homes during Eid. On April 15, Christians will be invited to the houses of right-wing activists for the Vishu celebration. While the initiative has been well received by the general public, according to BJP leaders, it is being closely studied by both the Congress and the ruling Left.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the driving force behind the initiative. At the party’s national executive meeting in Hyderabad, he requested that the cadre organise a “sneha samvaad” (message of affection) to the minorities in Kerala.

PM Modi also announced that the BJP will form a coalition government in Kerala, where assembly elections are scheduled for 2026, during an event held at the BJP headquarters in Delhi following the party’s victories in the three northeastern states.

He suggested that the party would rely this time on the assistance of the Christian community, which he said had provided the party with a lot of support in the northeast.

While the Left and Congress are fierce competitors in the state, he had claimed, they ran as allies in the Tripura polls, pointing to the two major parties in Kerala.

According to sources, the BJP is also preparing a “Thank Modi” programme that would feature testimonials from those who have benefited from different Central projects in the state. Already around 12,000 people have sent in “Thanks Modi” videos in Malayalam.
