In a major boost to India’s high-speed rail ambitions and Uttar Pradesh’s tourism prospects, the Indian Railways is likely to soon launch a bullet train between Delhi and Varanasi, covering a distance of 840 kilometers in just three and a half hours. The project aims to offer a faster, more affordable alternative to flights, especially for middle-class travelers.
According to media reports, the bullet train will operate along the Delhi-Varanasi High-Speed Rail Corridor (DVHSRC), which is expected to be completed by 2029, at a cost of ₹43,000 crore. The train will start from Hazrat Nizamuddin station in Delhi and terminate at Manduadih station in Varanasi, with 12 intermediate stations enhancing regional connectivity across Uttar Pradesh.
Travel Time: Just 3.5 hours from Delhi to Varanasi
Distance Covered: 840 km
Total Stations: 12, including Noida Sector 146, Jewar Airport, Mathura, Agra, Etawah, Kannauj, Lucknow, Raebareli, Pratapgarh, Prayagraj, and Bhadohi
Start & End Stations: Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi) to Manduadih (Varanasi)
Train Frequency: Every 47 minutes, between 6 AM to 12 midnight
Daily Trains: 18
Expected Completion: 2029
Estimated Project Cost: ₹43,000 crore
A dedicated underground station is also being built for the bullet train at Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi, with a 15 km long tunnel under construction. Meanwhile, in Lucknow, the bullet train station will be strategically located near Awadh Crossing, between Amausi Airport and Charbagh Railway Station, offering seamless access to air and rail travelers.
With flight tickets becoming increasingly expensive, the bullet train is expected to become the preferred mode of transport for both business and leisure travelers commuting between Delhi and key cities in Uttar Pradesh.
The project will not only slash travel time drastically but also bring smaller cities like Bhadohi, Pratapgarh, and Kannauj into the mainstream tourism and economic corridor.
