Bullet Train: India’s First Bullet Train Section Set for Completion in August 2026, Says Railways Minister

In a major announcement, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed plans for the completion of India’s inaugural bullet train section between Bilimora and Surat in Gujarat by August 2026. The 50-kilometer stretch is part of the larger Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor. Minister Vaishnaw also outlined several initiatives, including the indigenously developed Kavach system to prevent on-track collisions, the Gajraj system to mitigate elephant-train collisions, and the expansion of rail networks to enhance connectivity across the country.

Groundbreaking Technological Advancements in Rail Safety

Minister Vaishnaw highlighted the Kavach system, a homegrown warning system designed to avert on-track collisions. Developed in response to a tragic incident in Odisha’s Balasore, the system aims to enhance rail safety and prevent accidents. The minister also shared updates on the Gajraj system, addressing collisions between trains and elephants, emphasizing a commitment to innovative solutions for wildlife protection.

Rail Network Overhaul and Service Enhancements

The Railways Minister outlined plans for expanding the rail network, improving services, and increasing the number of trains in operation. Despite pandemic challenges, the number of mail/express services rose from 1,768 to 2,124, suburban services increased from 5,626 to 5,774, and passenger trains grew from 2,792 to 2,856. Notably, the Railways served 640 crore passengers in 2022/23, with a target of reaching 750 crore in the upcoming fiscal year.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor Progress

Minister Vaishnaw’s announcement builds on recent developments in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor, including the completion of 100 km of viaducts and 230 km of pier work. The Bilimora-Surat section marks a significant stride in India’s ambitious high-speed rail project, reflecting a commitment to modernizing the country’s rail infrastructure.
