CM Bhagwant Mann Slams Congress Leaders, Demands Reimbursement for Mukhtar Ansari’s Jail Expenses

CM Bhagwant Mann: During the Congress administration, gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari spent a “cosy stay” in Rupnagar jail, costing the state budget Rs 55 lakh, according to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today. He said, “The state government will recover this money from former CM Capt Amarinder Singh and ex-Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.”

CM Mann Calls Out Special Treatment Given to Gangster-Politician Mukhtar Ansari

In addition, he added, the government had spent money debating Ansari’s case before the Supreme Court. Mann has already noted that despite warrants, Ansari was held in the Rupnagar jail from January 2019 to April 2021 and wasn’t brought before the courts in Uttar Pradesh. Mann tweeted, “The amount will be recovered from former CM Capt Amarinder Singh, who also held the charge of the Home Minister as well as from then Jail Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.” “In case of non-payment, money will be recovered from their pension and the facilities provided to them by the government will be withdrawn,” he wrote in a tweet. Mann emphasised that Ansari received the special treatment since he was close with the Congress leaders. He said, “Capt Amarinder and Randhawa extended largesse to the gangster for his comfortable stay in jails of Punjab. Why should the state waste taxpayers’ money?”

Capt. Amarinder Challenges CM Mann’s Claims

Capt. Amarinder, former chief minister, mocked CM Mann and advised him to become familiar with the legal system before making such utterances. He said, “I was a CM for nine-and-a-half years, while Mann has not completed one-and-a-half year. He should gain experience before making such ignorant statements about the process of governance.” He said, “Mukhtar Ansari was brought to Punjab and detained under the due process of law. Where does the CM or for that matter the former Jail Minister come into the picture?” he asked. Ansari was allegedly detained at the Rupnagar jail for two years and three months following the filing of a “fake” FIR, according to claims made by former jail minister Harjot Singh Bains in June 2022. Bains allegedly received VIP treatment and even had Ansari’s wife stay with him. Bains had claimed that the Congress had hired senior solicitors to represent Ansari and that the Uttar Pradesh government had to petition the Supreme Court to obtain his custody.
