Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has once again stirred political discussions with his latest remarks praising the Narendra Modi-led government for its trade deal with the UK. Adding to the buzz, his viral selfie with Union Minister Piyush Goyal has intensified speculation about his growing distance from Congress.
Tharoor, a four-time MP from Thiruvananthapuram, lauded the Modi government’s progress in finalising a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Britain. He described the development as a positive step for India’s economy. His appreciation, however, did not go unnoticed within Congress, where his frequent compliments toward political rivals have raised eyebrows.
Alongside his praise, a selfie featuring Tharoor and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has sparked further discussions.

Good to exchange words with Jonathan Reynolds, Britain’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade, in the company of his Indian counterpart, Commerce & Industry Minister @PiyushGoyal. The long-stalled FTA negotiations have been revived, which is most welcome pic.twitter.com/VmCxEOkzc2

The image, which Tharoor posted on social media, shows the two leaders smiling together. This is particularly significant as Goyal had once mocked Tharoor’s "foreign accent." Despite their past exchanges, the Congress MP acknowledged Goyal’s role in trade negotiations and expressed optimism over the stalled UK-India trade deal.
Accordig to media reports, Shashi Tharoor’s growing admiration for the policies of rival parties has caused discomfort within Congress. Recently, he also praised Kerala’s Left government for making business regulations more efficient. His earlier endorsement of Prime Minister Modi’s U.S. visit had already raised concerns within his party.
As speculation about his political future grows, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has offered an open invitation. Senior leader Thomas Isaac remarked that if Tharoor exits Congress, he will still have strong political backing in Kerala.
While Tharoor continues to maintain his stance within Congress, his frequent praise for rivals and visible camaraderie with BJP leaders keep fueling speculation about his next move.
