Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta clarified that the recent demolition of the Madrasi Camp slum was conducted strictly in compliance with court directives. She stated that the camp was situated along the Barapullah drain, and multiple court orders had called for its removal to allow unhindered cleaning operations and prevent a repeat of 2023-like urban flooding in the capital.

"Neither the government nor the administration can oppose a court order," she emphasized. She further noted that all affected residents were allotted alternative housing and relocated accordingly.
Gupta also mentioned that similar actions took place at two other locations, including near railway tracks, where the concerned authority—the Railways—led the initiative. "In the event of any mishap, who will take responsibility?" she asked, underscoring the urgency behind the clearances.
Chief Minister Stresses On Govt Priorities
While refraining from targeting any political opponent, the Chief Minister stressed that development and safety remain the government's top priorities. She added that work worth ₹700 crore is currently underway to enhance infrastructure and living conditions across Delhi.
She also addressed concerns about similar demolitions that recently took place at two other locations, including one near railway tracks. Gupta clarified that the action in that area was led by the Railways, which had to ensure safety in their operational zones. “In the unfortunate event of a loss of life, who should be held accountable?” she asked. “The court knows what it’s doing, and its orders are meant to protect people.”
Highlighting the broader development agenda of her government, the Chief Minister pointed to ongoing work across Delhi worth ₹700 crore, focused on improving housing, infrastructure, and public sanitation. She reiterated that the vision is not just to build houses for underprivileged citizens but to ensure they live with dignity and stability.
