Cyclone Fengal to Make Landfall Near Puducherry, IMD Issues Red Alert

Cyclone Fengal is set to hit Tamil Nadu’s coast near Puducherry on Saturday evening, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for Tamil Nadu, South Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and parts of Karnataka. The cyclone, currently positioned 300-350 km off the Tamil Nadu coast, has intensified into a cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 70-80 km/h, gusting up to 90 km/h.

Widespread Rainfall Forecast


Ananda Das, Head of the IMD Cyclonic Division, stated that heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in the coastal districts of North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh during landfall. Interior regions of Tamil Nadu, as well as Kerala and Karnataka, will continue to experience significant rainfall until December 1.

Fishermen and Coastal Residents Warned


The Puducherry Fisheries Department has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea, while coastal residents have been warned of potential flooding and rough seas. Puducherry Port has raised “Warning Signal Number 7,” indicating the cyclone’s proximity to the port.

Impact on Agriculture
Heavy rains preceding the cyclone have already caused damage in Tamil Nadu, with over 800 acres of paddy fields submerged in Nagapattinam district. Affected areas include Kamashwaram, Pudupalli, Vallapallam, and Vanamadevi, leaving farmers in despair.

Emergency Measures in Place
Authorities have deployed emergency response teams and are implementing precautionary measures to mitigate the cyclone’s impact. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to stay vigilant and follow safety instructions.

Cyclone’s Progress Monitored Closely
The IMD confirmed on social media that Cyclone Fengal intensified into a cyclonic storm at 2:30 pm on November 29. Continuous monitoring and updates are being provided to ensure preparedness in affected regions.
