Defence PRO Chennai shared details of the operation on social media platform X, stating, “70 Indian Army soldiers headed by Major Ajay Sangwan rushed to the Krishna Nagar area for Cyclone Fengal rescue operations and rescued over 100 people. Rescue efforts are ongoing.” The Indian Army’s timely intervention has been crucial in aiding those stranded in flooded areas.

IMD Highlights Record-Breaking Rainfall

The IMD reported that Puducherry experienced 48.4 cm of rainfall within 24 hours, marking the highest cumulative rainfall for the period between 1995 and 2024. The IMD emphasized that Cyclone Fengal is responsible for this extraordinary weather event. Heavy rainfall has also led to waterlogging in Chennai, forcing authorities to evacuate residents from low-lying areas to safer locations.
