On October 5, 2025, Darjeeling was struck by heavy rains. The heavy rains led to massive landslides that claimed the lives of at least nine individuals, destroyed numerous homes, and damaged roads. The weather department (IMD) has issued a red alert in Darjeeling and Kalimpong, effective until October 6, and more landslides are likely to occur.
Deaths and Missing People
The authorities have verified that nine individuals lost their lives in various locations such as Sarsaly, Jasbirgaon, Mirik Basti, Dhar Gaon, and the vicinity of Mirik Lake. Two individuals remain missing close to Mirik Lake. In Dhar Gaon, some individuals were fortunate to be pulled out of the mud alive, but numerous houses were lost. State minister Udayan Guha added that the number of deaths may even be 17, but this is yet to be ascertained.
Rescue and Help Work
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and rescue teams are trying to save the people. However, it is complicated due to slippery hills, constant rain, and damaged roads. Camps are established for people whose homes have been lost, and NGOs assist in the process by providing food and support.
Worst-Hit Areas
The worst hit is the Mirik Lake side. Numerous dwellings were swept away, and the Mirik Sukhiapokhri road has been blocked. This has isolated villages and hilltop locations, and it is challenging to dispatch assistance. Families from Bishnulal Gaon, Jasbir Gaon, and Ward 3 Lakeside have been relocated to secure locations.
Red Alert from IMD
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised a red warning until October 6 across Darjeeling and Kalimpong. There is also a high possibility of additional landslides and road blockages because the soil is already saturated with water.
Problems in Rescue Work
The reason why rescue teams are having difficulties is that the terrain is hazardous. The steep and wet hills pose a problem to machines such as earthmovers. There is also a loss of communication channels, and this makes it difficult to access the trapped people
