Delhi Air Quality Index Soars to Hazardous Levels, GRAP IV Restrictions in Place, When Will Delhiites Breath Easy ?

Delhi’s AQI hits 455; GRAP IV restrictions enforced. Vehicle bans, WFH, hybrid classes, and construction halt in place.

Delhi Air Quality Index: Delhi is once again grappling with hazardous air pollution, with the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) soaring to 455. In response to this alarming spike, authorities have implemented GRAP Stages III and IV restrictions to control pollution and protect public health.

What Is GRAP and Why Is It Important?

The Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) is a set of pollution-control measures designed to respond to different levels of air pollution in Delhi. Stage IV is triggered when the AQI reaches hazardous levels, with the aim of limiting emissions, reducing traffic, and protecting public health.

GRAP IV Restrictions: What’s in Place?

To tackle the dangerous smog, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has enforced several measures:

  • Vehicle Restrictions: Non-essential trucks and older vehicles (BS III petrol and BS IV diesel) are banned from roads.
  • Work From Home: Offices are asked to implement 50% remote working for employees.
  • Schools: Hybrid classes for students up to IX and XI; X and XII continue offline.
  • Construction & Demolition: All non-essential construction activities are halted.

Why Is the Air So Bad?

Experts cite slow winds, stable atmospheric conditions, and poor pollutant dispersion as key drivers of this surge. Delhi’s winter months often trap dust, smoke, and emissions, making the air thick and hazardous.

Safety Tips for Delhiites

While authorities work to reduce pollution, residents are advised to:

  • Limit outdoor activities
  • Use air purifiers indoors.
  • Wear N95 masks when stepping outside.

When Will the Air Improve?

Given the weather conditions, improvement may take a few days. Citizens are urged to follow safety measures and stay up to date on AQI reports. Delhiites are facing tough days ahead, but staying safe, cautious, and informed is the best way to endure this hazardous smog.
