As the Delhi Assembly elections 2025 draw closer, political parties are ramping up their campaigns with promises of development and better living conditions. One of the key promises from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) led by Arvind Kejriwal is focused on improving the sewer and sewage systems, particularly for people living in slum areas. The promise is part of a larger vision for transforming the capital into a cleaner and more developed city.
Connecting Every Household to the Sewer System
Arvind Kejriwal recently spoke about the AAP's commitment to connecting every house in Delhi to the sewer system. During an event, he stated, “Work is already underway to connect every household to the sewer system in Delhi. Once our government is re-elected, we will replace the old sewer pipelines and clean them to ensure that residents no longer face problems caused by sewage.”
The Push for Cleaner and Healthier Slum Areas
The AAP government has been prioritising the sewer problem since it first took office in 2015. Arvind Kejriwal pointed out that Delhi is home to 1,792 unauthorised colonies, many of which are in dire need of infrastructure improvements.
“Before our government took charge, these slum areas lacked basic development. Now, we are laying new pipelines across these colonies,” he added. His promise also includes the cleaning of sewers, ensuring that residents no longer have to endure unhygienic conditions caused by poor sewage management.
Arvind Kejriwal’s Vision for a Sewage-Free Future
In his address, Kejriwal assured the people that the AAP government’s focus isn’t just on politics but on improving the quality of life for the residents. “I always say that I am an engineer and I know how to work, I don't know politics.,” he remarked during an interview on the YouTube channel ‘Think School’.

He also highlighted the progress made in managing Delhi’s water and sewage issues, noting that although 3-4% of Delhi still lacks direct access to water through pipelines, the government is actively working to resolve this with the use of tankers.
Improving Sewage Treatment and Building New Plants
Along with laying sewer pipelines, Kejriwal emphasised that the AAP government is working to improve sewage treatment across Delhi. “We have made sure that nearly all slum colonies in Delhi now have proper sewer lines, which send dirty water directly to sewage treatment plants,” he explained. Moreover, the government is focused on constructing new sewage treatment plants and expanding the capacity of existing ones to better handle the city’s growing needs.
