In a tragic event, a four-storey building collapsed in the Seelampur area of northeast Delhi in the early hours of Saturday, causing multiple people to be feared trapped underneath the rubble. The collapse occurred around 7 AM on Gali No. 5 in Janta Colony, causing widespread panic in the locality.

Emergency Teams Arrive at the Scene

Seven fire tenders, along with teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service, and Delhi Police, rushed to the scene. According to eyewitnesses, a loud crash occurred before the building came completely down, and the rubble filled the narrow alley with dust.

Multiple Rescued, Four-month-old among Survivors

Preferring anonymity, eyewitnesses said three to four were rescued and sent to hospitals. Those rescued included a 14-month-old baby, four men, and three women. The baby is being treated at GTB Hospital, and the others were sent to Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital (JPC).

Locals Helped with Initial Rescue Efforts

Local people stepped up and began helping before officials could arrive. They formed human chains, began removing debris, and began assisting victims who were trapped. Many locals believe that 4-5 people may still be trapped in the rubble, but an official account has not yet been provided.

Possible Causes: Rain and Structural Weakness

While the cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, preliminary reports indicate that heavy rain in Delhi overnight may have been a contributing factor. Experts warn that buildings in densely populated urban areas, especially older buildings or informal settlements, are at significant risk during the monsoon season.

Search Operation is Continuing with Scenes Stabilized

Delhi Police have sealed off the area for safety, allowing the rescue teams to continue their work without interference. Rescuers have been cautious in their undertaking, as the conditions are still unstable. Once the rescue operation is completed, a proper structural audit can take place to ascertain the next steps.

Desperate Need for Building Safety Legislation

The collapse screams of the need for planning and building code enforcement and for mandatory structural inspection within older urban colonies. Authorities may investigate previously permitted conditions and whether the building had undergone illegal alterations.
