In a historic move, Rekha Gupta has been announced as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. The Shalimar Bagh MLA, who secured a massive victory with nearly 30,000 votes, will now lead the BJP government in Delhi. Meanwhile, Parvesh Verma, who defeated former CM and AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi seat, will serve as Deputy Chief Minister. Additionally, Vijender Gupta, a three-time winner from Rohini, has been appointed as the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly.
The decision was finalized in the BJP legislative party meeting, where Satish Upadhyay and Vijender Gupta proposed Rekha Gupta’s name, which received unanimous support from all legislators. With this, Rekha Gupta becomes Delhi’s fourth Chief Minister, marking a significant moment in the capital’s political landscape.
Why Did BJP Choose Rekha Gupta?
Many are wondering how Rekha Gupta emerged as BJP’s choice for the top post, especially when prominent leaders were reportedly in discussions with Parvesh Verma. While the New Delhi MLA was accommodated as Deputy CM, political analysts believe that Rekha Gupta’s strong electoral performance, organizational experience, and community support played a decisive role.
Sources had already speculated that if BJP considered a woman CM for Delhi, Rekha Gupta would be the top contender. Her political achievements, grassroots connections, and ability to mobilize voters, especially among women and the Vaishya community, are seen as key factors behind BJP’s decision.
Grand Oath-Taking Ceremony on February 20
Preparations are in full swing for the swearing-in ceremony, which will be held at Ramlila Maidan on Thursday, February 20, at 12:35 PM. Along with Rekha Gupta and Parvesh Verma, at least six other ministers are expected to take the oath. However, the final cabinet lineup is yet to be disclosed by the BJP. The event is set to witness the presence of nearly 30,000 guests, making it a grand political spectacle.
With BJP’s new leadership in Delhi, all eyes will now be on Rekha Gupta’s governance and policy direction in the coming days.
