Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday reaffirmed her government’s commitment to improving the lives of slum dwellers, describing them as not just citizens of the capital but as the "working backbone" of the city. In a tweet, she announced that the government has approved a ₹700 crore budget aimed at providing safe, stable, and clean housing to every slum resident.
“People living in Delhi’s slums are not just citizens — they are the working force that keeps this metropolis moving. Our government believes they deserve more than just shelter — they deserve a life of dignity,” Gupta stated.
Dignified Housing a Priority
CM Gupta emphasized that the government's mission goes beyond infrastructure.
“Our goal is clear — we are committed to uplifting the lives of slum dwellers. We promise that each one of them will get their own home. Until then, we will ensure they live in their current locations with improved amenities, sanitation, and safety,” she said.
Rehabilitation with Dignity, Not Displacement
Addressing concerns over past slum removals, Gupta clarified:
“Wherever slums have been cleared, it was either under court orders or after ensuring rehabilitation arrangements were already made.”
She added that true development in Delhi will be achieved only when every slum dweller feels respected and secure — a vision her government is determined to realize.
This declaration signals a renewed push toward inclusive urban development, where the most vulnerable citizens are central to policy and planning.
