In a major development, the Delhi government has approved a revised and significantly enhanced reward policy for Olympic and Paralympic medal winners. The decision was taken during the Cabinet meeting held at the Delhi Secretariat and announced by senior BJP leader Rekha Gupta through a social media post. She described the move as a “historic step in the interest of the youth and athletes of Delhi.”
Delhi has now become the first state in India to offer the highest prize money to Olympic medal winners, aimed at encouraging excellence in sports and honouring the hard work of athletes.
Revised Cash Rewards for Olympic Winners
Under the new policy:
Gold medalists will receive ₹7 crore
Silver medalists will receive ₹5 crore
Bronze medalists will receive ₹3 crore
Previously, the rewards stood at ₹3 crore for gold, ₹2 crore for silver, and ₹1 crore for bronze.
Government Jobs Along with Prizes
In addition to the increased monetary benefits, the Delhi government will also provide:
Group A government jobs to gold and silver medal winners
Group B jobs to bronze medal winners
This provision aims not only to support athletes financially but also to provide long-term stability and social dignity.
Support Extended to Other Competitions
The Delhi Cabinet has also announced that the reward structure and job opportunities will be enhanced for medal winners of the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and National Games. According to Rekha Gupta, these reforms will help instil confidence among aspiring sportspersons that their dedication and success will be recognized and respected.
Inspired by National Vision
Gupta further stated that the policy is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of sports as a tool for nation-building. She emphasized that this step reflects the Delhi government’s commitment to providing respect, stability, and new opportunities to the state’s youth and athletes.
Detailed guidelines and implementation mechanisms for the new policy are expected to be announced soon.
