In a significant move to modernise Delhi’s water distribution system, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta today flagged off a fleet of 1111 GPS-enabled water tankers for the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). The initiative marks a crucial step in tackling water supply issues across the capital, particularly in underserved and remote areas.

The flag-off ceremony, held at a central depot, saw the Chief Minister emphasise the need for transparency, real-time tracking, and timely delivery of water to citizens. The use of GPS technology will allow the DJB to monitor tanker routes, prevent misuse, and ensure equitable distribution of water.

"Every drop of water is precious. With these GPS-enabled tankers, we are not just improving access—we are ensuring accountability and efficiency," CM Gupta said while addressing the media.

Smarter Governance Meets Basic Needs

The rollout comes at a time when several areas in Delhi face erratic water supply, especially during the peak summer months. With the deployment of 1111 tankers, the Delhi Jal Board aims to cover high-demand zones, reduce delays, and curb complaints of tanker diversions.

Officials say this is one of the largest such deployments in recent years. Each tanker is equipped with real-time tracking systems, allowing residents and officials alike to monitor routes via the DJB’s online platform or helpline services. This will also help in curbing water pilferage and ensuring that no neighbourhood is left behind.

Public Reaction and Future Plans

Residents welcomed the move but also highlighted the need for long-term water sustainability. Environmentalists and urban planners have called this a positive short-term fix, while urging parallel efforts in rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge.

Sources within the Delhi government revealed that this is just Phase 1 of a broader plan that includes digitisation of water supply data, predictive demand modelling, and AI-based resource allocation.
