In a significant move towards enhancing healthcare accessibility, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has given her approval for the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, ensuring that people of Delhi can now avail health insurance coverage of up to ₹10 lakh. This decision was made on the very first day of the new government’s tenure, during a cabinet meeting held immediately after the swearing-in ceremony.
What is the Ayushman Bharat Scheme?
Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) is a centrally sponsored health scheme that provides cashless and paperless medical treatment at government and empanelled private hospitals across India. The program aims to support economically weaker sections by covering hospitalization costs, surgeries, and critical treatments without financial burden.
Key Benefits for Delhi Residents
Increased Health Insurance Coverage: Delhiites will now receive up to ₹10 lakh in health coverage, higher than the previous limit.
Cashless Treatment: Beneficiaries can avail free treatment at empanelled hospitals without worrying about expenses.
Wider Hospital Network: Patients can seek treatment not only in Delhi but also in other states at hospitals registered under Ayushman Bharat.
Covers Major Medical Expenses: Includes treatment for cardiac surgeries, cancer care, kidney transplants, orthopedic procedures, and more.
Eligibility & Enrollment: Low-income families, as per Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) data, will be eligible, and registration can be done through hospitals or online portals.
What’s Next?
With this approval, lakhs of eligible Delhi residents can now register and avail free medical treatment under the scheme. The move is expected to provide relief to low-income families who previously struggled with high medical costs.
By implementing Ayushman Bharat Yojana, the Delhi government has taken a major step towards universal healthcare, ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent people from accessing quality medical services.
