Delhi Election Result 2025: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which once dominated Delhi’s political scene, is facing a major setback in the 2025 Assembly elections. From a landslide victory in previous polls to a significant drop in seats, several factors contributed to this outcome. Let’s take a look at the top reasons behind AAP’s struggle this election.
1. Anti-Incumbency Factor
AAP enjoyed massive support in the 2015 and 2020 elections, but this time, the public sentiment shifted. Voters seemed dissatisfied with the party’s repeated claims that the Union government was obstructing its work. Instead of sympathising, people opted for change, leading to a decline in AAP’s vote share.
2. ‘Modi Ki Guarantee’ Impact
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aggressive campaigning and promises under ‘Modi ki Guarantee’ resonated strongly with the voters. His direct outreach, coupled with the BJP’s strategic messaging, helped the party gain significant ground against AAP.
3. The ‘Sheesh Mahal’ Controversy
One of the biggest talking points of the election was the controversy surrounding the renovation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence. The BJP alleged that Kejriwal spent crores on refurbishing his official home. A report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) further revealed that the initial estimate of Rs 7.91 crore surged to Rs 33.66 crore upon completion. While AAP tried to counter with accusations of extravagance against PM Modi, the narrative did not favour them.
4. Liquor Policy Case and Leadership Crisis
AAP’s campaign took a hit due to the legal troubles of its top leaders. With key figures like Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Sanjay Singh facing arrests in the Delhi excise policy case, the party struggled to maintain momentum. Though they secured bail and campaigned extensively, the controversy dented their credibility.
5. Yamuna Pollution Row Backfired
During the campaign, Kejriwal accused the BJP-led Haryana government of “poisoning” the Yamuna River. However, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena and Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar dismissed the claims. Additionally, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini threatened legal action, further weakening AAP’s argument.
Election Trends So Far
As per the Election Commission’s latest trends, the BJP is leading in 48 seats, while AAP is ahead in 22. This marks a significant decline from 2020 when AAP won 62 seats, leaving the BJP with just eight. The 2015 elections were even more in AAP’s favour, with 67 out of 70 seats in their kitty.
With these factors at play, the 2025 Delhi election results highlight a major shift in voter sentiment. The coming days will reveal how AAP plans to rebuild and regain public trust.
