Delhi Flight Delays: Indira Gandhi International Airport has been experiencing flight delays and rescheduling since early morning today. Flight operations are being stopped for both domestic and international operations because of bad conditions, limited visibility, and airport congestion.
Why are we experiencing disruption?
The principal contributor to flight delays is the density of the smog, and poor air quality has led to visibility on the runway being below the required safety threshold. With the anticipated busy festive time, general passenger traffic is up. The original number of passengers is higher than operational capacity, contributing to congestion and longer waiting times for boarding and taxiing.
Have airport operations resumed?
The airport has confirmed visibility has improved, but slowly since late morning today, and some airlines have advised they are resuming a flexible approach to offer limited flights. All travellers are asked to check to see if their travel sector is operating normally, as there are still some sectors that are not back in operation or were cancelled.
Advisories to Passengers and the Airline Situation
IndiGo, Vistara, and Air India are sending messages to actives to check the airlines’ websites or the App. Many airlines are also deploying additional staff to terminals for rebooking or providing information.
What Travellers are Suggested to do
- Check the airline website or airport website for real-time flight status updates.
- Arrive early, due to lines at the counter potentially running longer.
- Look for alerts by way of SMS or email notifications from the airline
Outlook for the Rest of the Day
If the weather continues to improve, if weather observations hold true, performances can resume its normal schedule by late this evening. Transport Canada has been in communication for the last several hours to make every effort to minimise disruption for passengers.
