Delhi Flood Alert: Yamuna Breaches 2013 Mark, Should Ghaziabad Residents Worry ?

The Yamuna River has crossed its 2013 flood level in Delhi, reaching 207.39m at the Old Railway Bridge. With the river flowing above the danger mark, Ghaziabad residents are now anxious about potential flooding.

The Yamuna River in Delhi has reached 207.39 meters at the Old Railway Bridge, which is higher than the flood level from 2013. This has led to a high flood alert. More than 8,000 people have been forced to leave low-lying parts of the capital because of this surge.

Why should we care about Ghaziabad?

Because it is near the floodplains of the Yamuna and Hindon rivers, Ghaziabad is at risk when the water levels in Delhi rise. Even though there hasn’t been any instant flooding in Ghaziabad, people are still worried because heavy rains in Uttarakhand and Haryana could make the water flow faster downstream.

  • The government is taking action. In both Delhi and Ghaziabad, the NDRF and water control teams are working.
  • The local government has found sensitive areas near the Hindon floodplains that might need to be evacuated.
  • People should stay away from the riverbanks and listen to government warnings.

What the government did

Parvesh Verma, who is the Minister of Flood and Irrigation in Delhi, said that the officials are on high alert and that rescue equipment is ready. He told the people that all the weak spots had been checked out and that plans for the next six months had been made.

At the same time, government agencies have offered their help with flood relief and evacuations. Experts have warned that the water level could rise even more if it rains more in Uttarakhand and Haryana.

The Bigger Picture

In the past, whenever the water level in the Yamuna river rises above 207 meters, nearby NCR areas like Ghaziabad and Noida have been warned of a risk. Experts say that if the upstream barrages keep letting water out, low-lying areas of Ghaziabad could be partially flooded, but a large-scale flood is not expected yet.

In short, there is a major risk of flooding in Delhi. Ghaziabad is not in immediate danger, but people there need to be very careful over the next 48 hours.
