The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced a major boost to airport connectivity with a new metro extension linking Aerocity to Indira Gandhi Domestic Airport Terminal-1 (IGD T-1). This development is set to significantly ease travel for air passengers by providing direct metro access to one of the busiest domestic terminals in the country.

Delhi Metro Expands Airport Connectivity

The new stretch is a 2.26-kilometre underground extension of the Golden Line, designed to ensure a smooth, fast, and stress-free commute for flyers. With this addition, passengers will be able to reach Terminal-1 without relying on road transport, reducing travel time and congestion around the airport zone.

DMRC’s Aerocity–Terminal 1 Extension to Offer Seamless Travel

According to DMRC, the corridor will feature one underground station and will directly connect Aerocity with IGD Airport Terminal-1. This strategic extension strengthens Delhi Metro’s vision of “Linking Lines, Connecting Corners” by integrating air and metro travel more efficiently than ever before.

The project is expected to be especially beneficial for daily commuters, frequent flyers, and airport staff, offering a reliable alternative to traffic-prone roads. It also aligns with Delhi’s broader push toward sustainable and public transport-driven urban mobility.

With this expansion, Delhi Metro continues to play a crucial role in transforming the National Capital Region’s transport infrastructure. The Aerocity–Terminal-1 extension marks another step toward making Delhi’s airport connectivity truly seamless, modern, and passenger-friendly.

The Aerocity–Terminal 1 corridor is expected to significantly improve last-mile connectivity for passengers flying with domestic airlines operating from IGD Terminal-1. At present, travelers largely depend on cabs, buses, or private vehicles, often facing heavy traffic congestion during peak hours. The new metro link is likely to reduce travel uncertainty and offer a predictable, time-efficient option for airport access.

Urban transport experts believe the underground extension will also help decongest key arterial roads leading to the airport, particularly during early morning and late-night flight schedules. By shifting a substantial portion of airport-bound traffic to the metro, the project supports Delhi’s long-term goal of reducing vehicular emissions and promoting eco-friendly public transport.

The Golden Line extension further strengthens Delhi Metro’s expanding airport connectivity network, which already includes links to IGI Airport via other corridors. With this addition, DMRC aims to integrate air travel seamlessly with the city’s metro system, making inter-modal travel more convenient for passengers from different parts of the National Capital Region.

Officials have stated that the project reflects DMRC’s continued focus on infrastructure modernization and passenger comfort. The underground design ensures minimal surface disruption while maintaining safety, speed, and reliability standards associated with the Delhi Metro network.
