Delhi News: On Sunday, Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, inaugurated the extension of the three-lane Sarai Kale Khan flyover, providing a signal-free route from ITO to Ashram. During the event, he mentioned that his government saved approximately ₹16 crore during the project's execution and ₹557 crore in constructing 30 flyovers over the past five years.

Guinness Book of World Records

Kejriwal suggested that this achievement should be recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records. He highlighted the development of flyovers and underpasses in Delhi since independence, revealing that his government has built 30 of the 102 flyovers and underpasses in the city over the last eight years. He also mentioned plans to construct 25 more flyovers, with nine under construction and 16 awaiting approval, bringing the total to over 125.

The PWD minister, Atishi, noted the transformation of the Sarai Kale Khan and Ashram area from traffic congestion to a more efficient commute.

Here are five key points about the new flyover:

  1. The Sarai Kale Khan flyover will improve the commute from Ghaziabad and ITO to Ashram, especially for traffic coming from Akshardham, Delhi-Meerut expressway, and Mayur Vihar. With the upcoming RapidX project in Sarai Kale Khan, traffic is expected to further increase.
  2. Previously, there was a one-way flyover for vehicles traveling from Ashram to ITO, leading to traffic congestion on the opposite carriageway at the T-junction between the road from ISBT and Ring Road.
  3. Kejriwal mentioned that a 16-kilometer stretch on Ring Road, from Chandgi Ram Akhara to Ashram Chowk, has become signal-free. He also noted ongoing efforts to address congestion points in Delhi by implementing solutions like U-turns and additional flyovers to reduce traffic congestion.
  4. Atishi emphasized that the flyover will annually save ₹19 crore in fuel costs and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 5 tonnes every day.
  5. Construction of the three-lane flyover began in July 2022, and it was completed in one year and three months. The project includes two U-turns and aims to reduce pollution and save time for commuters who used to get stuck at red lights, according to OP Tripathi, the PWD engineer-in-chief.

Kejriwal expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in the construction of the flyover, including PWD officials, engineers, contractors, agencies, and workers.
