Delhi Pollution: Delhi is once again suffocating with a dense layer of smog as Air Quality Index (AQI) readings in the “severe” category. The hazardous air has raised health concerns and prompted authorities to undertake emergency responses. Residents are experiencing troubles with breathing, lack of visibility and irritation in the eyes and throat as the city endures one of its most polluted periods of the year.

What is Causing Such a Sudden Rise in AQI?

The sharp fall in air quality in Delhi is due to several factors. Stubble burning of seasonal agricultural crops, as well as automobile emissions, industry emissions and low winds holding localized pollutants in the Delhi atmosphere are all contributing to a higher concentration of all of these pollutants over Delhi. Even more, construction dust and fireworks from festivals have all contributed to the current situation in Delhi.

Controlling Pollution in Delhi

Therefore, the Delhi government has once again enacted the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) prohibiting construction activities, commerce, and the use of vehicle travel. Schools have shifted to virtual classes in some districts, and local agencies are monitoring real-time forecasting pollution hotspots.

Health Effects & Measures

Continuous exposure to high air quality index (AQI) may lead to serious respiratory illnesses, heart disease, and increased asthma symptoms. Residents should wear N95 masks, avoid outdoor activity, use air purifiers indoors, and drink water.

What lies ahead for Delhi?

Experts say that if the winds are blowing favorably and stubble burning subsides, there could be a bit of relief over the next few weeks. However, longer term, sustainable solutions will have to be put in place (such as the move to greener energies, enhancements to public transport and stricter emissions controls) in order to avoid this environmental crisis each year.
