Double-Decker Boat Capsizes in Kerala, leaves 22 dead

Kerala: The state government of Kerala said that a double-decker boat capsized and sank on a beach in the Malappuram district Sunday night, killing at least 22 people, including seven children. Around 7 o’clock in the evening, the tragedy happened nearby Tuvalthiram beach in the Tanur region of the district. According to the authorities, a complaint has been opened against the boat’s owner for responsible homicide.

There were 40 people on the boat who had tickets, though the actual number is still uncertain, and many more did not. According to reports, the yacht was also lacking a safety certificate. Rescue operations are being carried out by members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Indian Coast Guard. In order to find individuals who are still missing, underwater cameras are being employed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths, writing in his tweet he said, “Pained by the loss of lives due to the boat mishap in Malappuram, Kerala. Condolences to the bereaved families. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased.”

The accident’s cause has not yet been determined

Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi wrote in his tweet that, “Distraught by the news of a houseboat capsizing in Malappuram, Kerala. My heartfelt condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones, and wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured. I appeal to Congress workers to assist the authorities in rescue operations.” Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala, made a visitation announcement and ordered the Malappuram district collector to launch an emergency rescue effort right now. The rescue operation involved villagers from Tanur as well as police, fire, and health personnel. The accident’s cause has not yet been determined, according to the authorities.
