Electricity Bill Hike: It has notified a 4.83% increase in power tariff for all consumers with effect from July 1, declared Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission. The tariff order uses the consumer price inflation and shall apply to both energy and fixed charges.
New Domestic Tariff Slabs Explained
The new slabs are 20 paise to 55 paise per unit for the domestic consumers. From ₹4.60 to ₹4.80 for 400 slab units bi-monthly under the minimum slab, ₹6.15 to ₹6.45 per unit for 401-500 units, ₹8.15 to ₹8.55 for 501-600, ₹9.20 to ₹9.65 for 601-800, and above 1,000 units from ₹11.25 to ₹11.80 per unit. For instance, if a consumer was consuming 500 units, he would now spend ₹2,565 for two months against ₹2,455 earlier.
For residential buildings with more than three floors but no lift, that fall under the LT tariff category 1E-a condominium-the rate has been hiked from ₹8.15 to ₹8.55 per unit. Moreover, fixed charges in this category have also been hiked from ₹102 to ₹107 per kilowatt a month.
Impact on Bi-Monthly Electricity Bills
Other LT categories, including public lighting, water supply, and sewage, shall have to shell out ₹8.55 from the earlier ₹8.15 per unit under the new tariff with the fixed charges revised at ₹107 per kilo-watt per month from ₹102. Revised tariffs seriously with immediate effect to the places of worship, cottage and micro industries, private educational institutions, and hostels, industries, and IT services.
The tariff increases in most of the HT categories would involve both energy and demand charges. The higher electricity tariff will only filter through to all types of consumers, from household domestic establishments, to commercial or industrial, depending on the quantum of the increase.
It's going to be a decision on increasing electricity tariffs—costs going up and pressure inflationary. Consumers across Tamil Nadu will have to get used to these higher costs as the new tariffs become applicable, thereby making energy efficiency and conservation a notable element for reducing the impact.
