Farmers Protest: Can’t Use Tractors on Highways, Says High Court; Must Protest Within Limits

Punjab & Haryana farmers face protest limitations but resume "Delhi Chalo" with MSP talks on the horizon

Farmer Protest

Farmers Protest: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that farmers cannot use tractor trolleys on highways during their protests, citing the Motor Vehicles Act. The court also reminded the farmers of their “constitutional duties” alongside their fundamental rights to protest.

The Court’s Stance

  • No Tractors on Highways: Citing the Act, the court declared tractor trolleys unauthorized on highways, effectively banning their use in protests.
  • Rights & Duties: The judges stressed the dual nature of citizens’ rights and responsibilities, reminding farmers that their right to protest doesn’t supersede others’ rights or public order.
  • Limited Protest Rights: While acknowledging the right to protest, the court clarified it comes with restrictions, ensuring public safety and convenience are not compromised.
  • Crowd Control: The Punjab government was directed to manage crowds and prevent large gatherings during protests, ensuring order and safety.

Farmers March On for MSP, Talks Resume on Feb 21st

The ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, which had been temporarily suspended following the fourth round of talks with the government, is set to resume on February 21. Farmer leaders, including Sarvan Singh Pandher, General Secretary of Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, announced the decision. The focus of the upcoming discussions will center on the government’s proposal concerning the Minimum Support Price (MSP), a pivotal demand put forth by the farmers. “We will continue with the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march on February 21 if there is no result,” emphasized Sarvan Singh Pandher.
