The distressing incident unfolded between April 3 and 5, culminating in a report filed with the Bengaluru East division cybercrime police station. Per Times of India, the perpetrators engaged the victim in a marathon call spanning nearly 36 hours, during which they recorded compromising footage of her and subsequently blackmailed her for ransom, threatening to distribute the footage on the dark web.

The fraudsters initiated contact with the victim under the guise of FedEx’s customer care department

The fraudsters initiated contact with the victim under the guise of FedEx’s customer care department, informing her of a parcel supposedly sent in her name that had been returned. They claimed the parcel contained illicit items, including passports, credit cards, and 140 synthetic narcotics (MDMA), purportedly sent from Mumbai to Thailand in her name. The victim was led to believe that immediate action was required to address the situation, according to PTI’s report.

The victim’s ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals to manipulate and exploit unsuspecting individuals for financial gain. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution when responding to unsolicited communications, especially those purportedly originating from reputable organizations like FedEx.
